Salazar – Lisbon AP Correspondent Dennis Redmont (right) meets Portuguese Premier Antonio Oliveira Salazar (left) on eve of Salazar’s birthday April 28, 1965. Man at center, looking this way, is Major Silva Pais, head of Portuguese political police (PIDE)
Dennis Redmont features in Visão História the Portuguese monthly, an article on Portugal in the 1960s. Portugal was no place to be for a journalist under the rule of António de Oliveira Salazar. A stifling censorship regime was in place, which targeted first and foremost journalists, both Portuguese or foreigners. It was so widespread that the only way to learn about what was occurring in the country was to read foreign newspapers. What is more, PIDE, the Portuguese Secret Political Police, not only prevented news from being printed but actively pursued foreign correspondents in an attempt to chase them out of the country or silence them.

Unorthodox in his dressing attires, he was a staunch believer of industry 4.0 and was ready to pursue his goals, even when this meant going against the powerful Confindustria, the Italian business “union”, or the Italian Trade Unions.
